CDNL 22 August 2023 – wrap up, attendee list and group photograph

Dear colleagues

I was delighted to see many new faces as well as old friends in our beautiful room at the Wereld Museum in Rotterdam – meeting with 87 library leaders from 70 countries is an experience I will reflect upon for many months to come – our conversations were warm and enlightening, and your highly collegiate approach to discussions and activities during our meeting ensured that we all came away with much to think about as we consider implementing artificial intelligence into our Libraries.

Importantly, as we grapple with the challenges of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and copyright, implementation of AI at scale, and transparency and other ethical considerations, it is clear that we do not need to rush. Indeed, we can and should take our time, explore new ideas and improve our understanding of the opportunities and risks as we progress our AI journeys.

I have attached copies of our two speaker presentations – my thanks to Dr Pauline McBride of the University of Glasgow and Isabelle Nyffenegger on behalf of Laurence Engel, President, National Library of France for their deep consideration of AI and the matters we need to take into account as leaders of knowledge institutions. Your presentations certainly generated much discussion during the breaks in our program.

Please also find attached a list of meeting attendees and our group photograph.

Finally, you will recall that Janne Andresoo will shortly vacate one of the CDNL deputy chair roles. Leslie Weir and I will make a call for nominations for the vacant position on the CDNL governance committee in coming months.

I trust your journeys home were safe and that you will return to your libraries enthused about the opportunities and challenges ahead.

With warm regards

Marie-Louise

Final Program and Homework: Conference of Directors of National Libraries: Tuesday 22 August Rotterdam

Dear fellow Directors/CEO’s of National Libraries and other CDNL meeting attendees.

I write to provide you with further information on our CDNL meeting arrangements and to ask you to do a little homework before our meeting on 22 August. Please find attached (below) the final meeting program including contact details for the CDNL meeting organising team in case you have any CDNL related questions whilst you are in Rotterdam.

  • Venue details: our meeting will take place at Wereldmuseum, Willemskade 25, Rotterdam. Please note: this is not the venue where the WLIC is being held. You will need to organise your own transport to and from your accommodation to the Wereldmuseum.
  • Meeting details: registration for the meeting opens at 10.00am (earlier entrance to the museum is not possible). Coffee and tea will be available until the meeting starts at 10.30am. Attached we are sending you the latest draft program. As far as the catering is concerned: everything is halal, there will be plenty of vegetarian alternatives available, and your other dietary requirements have been taken into account.
  • Homework: to prepare for the speed-date session (a series of 2 minutes of exchange with your peers in the afternoon): If you could instantly become an expert in something in your Library, what would you choose as your area of expertise and why? Please be ready to share some information about the subject or job in your Library that you would like to be an expert in, and why, with your peers.
  • Cultural evening: the meeting will close at 4.25pm which will provide sufficient time for those planning to attend the WLIC Cultural Evening to refresh. You can take advantage of one of the buses to the Cultural Evening venue that will leave from Ahoy Rotterdam (departing from Ahoy between 6.15pm and 7pm). You may also choose to make your way to the Cultural Evening independently, then travel to the main entrance at Blijdorplaan 8. Don’t forget to bring your voucher which will be attached to your WLIC name badge as an entrance ticket.  More information on the Cultural Evening is available here.

With warm regards, safe travels and see you in Rotterdam!
