CDNL Online Meeting June 2025 – Post-Event Communique

1. Introduction

We are pleased to inform all CDNL members of the successful conclusion of an online CDNL conference, held on 05 June 2025. This gathering brought together leaders from over 30 libraries covering every continent and representing the diversity of CDNLs institutions.

The theme for the event was: ‘Lessons from Library Leaders – new and experienced’. Dr Marie-Louise Ayres, CDNL Chair and Director-General of the National Library of Australia, hosted the event from Canberra, Australia.

2. Key Objectives and Agenda

The event focused on the following key objectives:

  • Electing a Chair and Vice Chairs to vacant positions.
  • Sharing knowledge and building relationships between participants.
  • Facilitating candid discussions and thoughtful participant involvement.

The agenda included the following sessions:

  • An election for CDNL Chair and Vice Chairs
  • Keynote One: ‘Lessons from Library Leaders – new and experienced’, Dr Audrey Whitty, Director of the National Library of Ireland
  • Keynote Two: ‘A Leadership Story’, Dagnija Baltina, Director of the National Library of Latvia
  • Small group breakout discussions focussed on attendees’ early leadership experiences
  • Group Zoom photograph

3. Event Highlights:

3.1. CDNL Committee Vote

From a strong field of candidates, three successful nominees were elected to the CDNL Committee:

  • Dr Tomasz Makowski, Director-General of the National Library of Poland, was promoted into the role of CDNL Chair from his Vice Chair position.
  • The successful Vice Chair nominees are:
    • Chinwe Veronica Anunobi, National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria
    • Taner Beyoğlu, Director-General for Libraries and Publications, The National Library of Türkiye

A formal handover of positions will be conducted in August, at the CDNL Annual Meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan.

3.2. Keynotes

Two keynotes were provided during the event:

  • Dr Audrey Whitty, Director of the National Library of Ireland, reflected on her role and the relationship she has observed between her background as a curator and her current role managing a large-scale capital works program. Dr Whitty also addressed the common challenge of declining visitor numbers – particularly among a younger audience, and shared insights from the National Library of Ireland’s experience. She emphasised the importance of advocating for additional resources, even when the likelihood of success is low. In closing, Dr Whitty acknowledging that while increasing access to library buildings is essential, it will also place added pressure on staff – which will require proactive planning by her leadership team.
  • Dagnija Baltiņa, Director of the National Library of Latvia, shared reflections on her leadership philosophy and how it has been shaped by her personal context. She spoke candidly about the challenges of stepping into a leadership role following a long-standing predecessor, and the difficultly of comparison to, and losing, a mentor. Grounding her investigation in the history of the book at the Library in Latvia, Ms Baltiņa explored the evolving role of the library in the life of the individual and the state, through the following key themes: ‘Is a library a birthright?’, ‘Phenomenon of a book’, ‘Library as a habit’, ‘Libraries and statehood’, ‘Champions of curiosity’ and ‘The public good and public purpose.’

3.3. Small group discussions

Participants were divided into four groups to discuss the guiding question of: What was the biggest surprise in your first years as the leader of your institution (good or bad)?

Each small group had a facilitator who provided shared their own experience and guided the interactions with a series of questions and prompts.

4. Next Steps

The following will occur after the event:

  • Action 1: Presenter PowerPoints, and any other relevant documentation, will be circulated to attendees where possible.
  • Action 2: Planning for the in-person 2025 CDNL Annual Meeting, scheduled for August 2025 (likely during the IFLA Congress in Astana, Kazakhstan).
  • Action 3: Handover materials will be prepared and passed to the new CDNL Committee members ahead of their terms commencing.

The Chair, Vice-Chairs and nominated support staff will be responsible for coordinating these actions.

5. Acknowledgements

We extend our deepest appreciation to:

  • Our new CDNL Committee members for their participation in the vote, and future work with the Committee.
  • All attendees and speakers for their invaluable contributions.

CDNL Vice-Chair Election – Results

Dear colleagues

I am pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the election for the vacant CDNL Vice-Chair position. The voting period, which took place from 02 October 2024 to 03 October 2024, saw robust participation from our membership, including those that were not able to join us in Brisbane.

Four highly qualified individuals were nominated for the role. I am delighted to confirm that Dr Tomasz Makowski (Director General, National Library of Poland) has been elected as the new Vice-Chair of CDNL.

I extend a heartfelt congratulations to Dr Makowski and look forward to working with him and his fellow Vice-Chair Leslie Weir (Director, National Libraries and Archives Canada) as we plan our next Annual Meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the nominees for their interest, as well as their continued contributions to the CDNL community.

As I mentioned in Brisbane, I encourage you all to consider nominating for CDNL leadership roles in the future. The Chair and one Vice-Chair position will be vacated in August 2025, with elections held to fill these important roles.

Please join me in congratulating Dr Makowski on his appointment as Vice-Chair.

Kindest regards

Marie-Louise

Invitation to CDNL, Brisbane Australia 3 October 2024 – please register.

Dear colleagues,

I write to invite you to register for the 2024 CDNL Annual Meeting, in Brisbane, Australia on 3 October 2024. Registrations will close on Friday 30 August.

Register for CDNL and professional tour of National Library of Australia here.

I request that each individual attendee complete the registration form to assist with catering and other function requirements.

IFLA Information Futures Summit

Our CDNL meeting will follow the IFLA Information Futures Summit in Brisbane, which runs from 30 September to 3 October 2024.  Early bird registration for the Summit closes Monday 17 June 2024. I hope to see many of you at this wonderful opportunity to ‘be stronger together’.

CDNL – 3 October

The October 2024 CDNL will run as an in-person event only. The event – as with Conference membership – is open to chief executives of all national libraries.

We will be meeting at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC), the same location as the IFLA Summit.

Our theme for 2024 will be Leading Libraries through Cyber Security Disasters. We have colleagues from two national libraries joining us to speak about what these disasters require of us as leaders.  We will also hear from an Australian expert, to speak to the demands of leadership in an increasingly complex cyber security environment. We will share an agenda in coming weeks.

As there are no membership fees for CDNL, we are unable to offer bursaries or other financial assistance to participants.

Professional tour of the National Library of Australia

On Friday 4 October – the day after CDNL – the National Library will offer a professional tour of our building and operations in our national capital, Canberra.

Australia is a big country! For those planning to travel to Canberra, please bear in mind that flight time Brisbane-Canberra is around 1 hour, 40 minutes (950km).

Canberra is not an international airport, so you will need to exit Australia via another city– return to Brisbane, or fly out via Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth.

For a return flight and accommodation for one night, you can expect additional costs upwards of AU$1000.

Formal invitations

We can provide formal invitations for named individuals for the purposes of note verbales and visa applications. We have registered CDNL as an official Government meeting with our Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, but cannot assist further with visa applications.

Election

During the October Annual Meeting, we will hold an election for the role of Vice-Chair. CDNL has two Vice-Chair roles; one is occupied by Leslie Weir from Libraries and Archives Canada and the other is vacant.

In the next few weeks, we will call for nominations for this role.  For your convenience, the CDNL Statutes provide an overview of the Committee, including the roles and responsibilities of its members and officers.

Future online meeting

I had hoped to host an online meeting earlier this year, but this has not proved possible.  I now expect to schedule an online meeting for early 2025.

Call for expressions of interest for attendance and speakers will be sent in due course.

With kind regards,

Marie-Louise
